Yoga Therapy Training – A Path to Holistic Healing and Teaching

Yoga is far more than just physical postures. It is a profound journey of self-discovery, healing, and personal transformation. For many yoga practitioners and teachers, the natural next step is to explore yoga therapy training a specialized path that empowers you to use yoga as a tool for holistic healing.

If you’ve completed your foundational yoga teacher training Thailand or elsewhere and want to expand your impact, yoga therapy training can unlock new possibilities for your practice and your career.

What Is Yoga Therapy Training?

Yoga therapy training is an advanced program designed to teach yoga teachers how to apply the principles and techniques of yoga to address specific physical, emotional, and psychological conditions.

Unlike general yoga classes that focus on overall wellness, yoga therapy is tailored to individual needs. It combines:

  • Asanas (postures) adapted for healing
  • Pranayama (breathwork) to calm the nervous system
  • Meditation and mindfulness practices
  • Lifestyle recommendations rooted in yogic philosophy

Yoga therapists work closely with clients to design personalized practices that support recovery from injuries, reduce chronic pain, manage stress, and improve mental health. This makes yoga therapy training a deeply rewarding choice for teachers who want to guide others toward healing on a deeper level.

Why Thailand Is a Top Destination for Yoga Teacher Training

If you’re considering building a solid foundation before entering yoga therapy, Thailand is one of the most popular destinations for aspiring teachers. The country’s rich spiritual traditions, tropical landscapes, and vibrant wellness culture create the ideal learning environment.

Yoga teacher training Thailand programs are known for:

  • Immersive, structured curricula
  • Experienced international instructors
  • Affordable costs compared to Western countries
  • A strong focus on mindfulness and community living

By completing your foundational training in Thailand, you gain the knowledge, discipline, and cultural grounding that make transitioning into yoga therapy much smoother. You also join a supportive global network of teachers and healers.

The Benefits of Becoming a Certified Yoga Therapist

Pursuing yoga therapy training offers life-changing benefits not just professionally, but personally.

1. Expanded Career Opportunities

Yoga therapy certification opens doors to diverse career paths. You can work in wellness centers, rehabilitation clinics, yoga studios, or even start a private practice. Many hospitals and corporate wellness programs now integrate yoga therapy into their services.

2. Deeper Personal Transformation

As you learn to guide others through healing, you’ll deepen your own practice. The training emphasizes self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and mindfulness qualities that help you navigate life with clarity and resilience.

3. Enhanced Teaching Skills

Yoga therapy builds on the skills you gain from your yoga instructor training, sharpening your understanding of anatomy, psychology, and therapeutic sequencing. This helps you create safe, effective classes for students of all abilities and conditions.

Yoga Therapy Training vs. Yoga Teacher Training

Although they share common roots, yoga therapy training and yoga teacher training are quite different in scope and approach.

  • Focus
    • Teacher training emphasizes sequencing group classes, alignment, and teaching methodology.
    • Therapy training focuses on applying yoga techniques to specific health conditions.
  • Client Approach
    • Teachers lead groups.
    • Therapists work one-on-one to create personalized practices.
  • Knowledge Depth
    • Therapy training requires a more comprehensive study of anatomy, pathology, psychology, and therapeutic techniques.

Most programs require completion of a 200-hour yoga instructor training as a prerequisite. This ensures you have a solid foundation in yoga philosophy and teaching before moving into therapeutic applications.

Explore Yoga Retreats to Enhance Your Journey

Before committing to a full training program, many aspiring yoga therapists attend immersive retreats. A yoga retreat Bali is one of the most sought-after experiences for deepening your personal practice while experiencing a new culture.

Retreats provide:

  • Daily asana and meditation practice
  • Workshops on mindfulness, Ayurveda, and holistic health
  • Space for introspection and emotional reset
  • Connection with like-minded individuals from around the world

This kind of immersive environment can be the perfect preparation for the intensity and depth of yoga therapy training. It gives you a taste of what it feels like to dedicate yourself fully to your practice.

Online Options for Yoga Therapy and Teacher Training

Not everyone can travel for weeks or months at a time. Fortunately, yoga teacher training online has made foundational education more accessible than ever.

Online training offers:

  • Flexible schedules you can balance with work or family
  • Lower costs compared to in-person courses
  • Access to recorded lessons and study materials
  • The comfort of learning at your own pace

However, online courses work best as a steppingstone. Once you complete your online 200-hour teacher training, consider joining an in-person yoga therapy course to gain hands-on experience, mentorship, and real-time feedback.

Bali as a Hub for Advanced Yoga Education

While Thailand is famous for foundational courses, Bali has become a global hub for advanced yoga studies. Its lush landscapes, spiritual culture, and focus on holistic wellness make it an ideal destination for continued growth.

Many Bali yoga teacher training programs are designed for experienced instructors who want to specialize, including yoga therapy. The learning environment is intentionally supportive and immersive, offering:

  • Advanced anatomy and therapeutic modules
  • Mind-body integration practices
  • Sustainable living and mindfulness education

This makes Bali an inspiring place to expand your skills and prepare for a yoga therapy certification.

How to Choose the Right Yoga Therapy Training Program

Choosing a yoga therapy program is a big decision, and the right choice can shape your future as a healer. Here are key factors to consider:

1. Accreditation and Standards

Ensure the program is accredited by recognized bodies like the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). This ensures your certification will be respected globally.

2. Curriculum Depth

Look for a well-rounded curriculum that covers therapeutic applications of asana, pranayama, meditation, and yoga philosophy, as well as anatomy, physiology, and psychology.

3. Experienced Faculty

Learn from instructors with extensive experience in both yoga and therapeutic modalities. Mentorship is essential in developing your confidence and competence.

4. Location and Environment

The training environment influences your learning experience. Many choose programs in Thailand or Bali for their serene settings and supportive wellness communities. Online options can also be a good fit if you need flexibility.

5. Schedule and Costs

Consider the time commitment, financial investment, and format (intensive vs. modular). Find a program that aligns with your lifestyle while offering the depth you need.

Students must begin their online course within 12 months of the date of purchase.

Students who do not begin the course within this period will be required to pay a $90 Study Group Allocation Fee before joining a study group.

Delaying the start of the course may affect eligibility for Yoga Alliance certification, as certification requirements are determined by Yoga Alliance and may change over time.

3. Study Group Policy

200-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training

Study Group Allocation

Students who select “Start as soon as possible” during enrollment will be assigned to the next available study group based on their preferred time zone and availability.

House of Om offers multiple study groups across different time zones to accommodate students worldwide.

Students who are not ready to begin should select “Do not want to start yet” during enrollment or notify Student Support before study group allocation.

Study groups are generally allocated within 2–4 weeks, although this may vary depending on teacher availability and the formation of suitable groups.

Guided Study Group

The 200-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training is delivered through guided study groups led by an assigned teacher. Each study group is designed to be completed over approximately 4 months, consisting of:

  • Approximately 3 months of live Zoom sessions.
  • Up to 1 additional month for homework review, teacher feedback, and final assessments.

Students are expected to complete all mandatory homework assignments, attend the required live Zoom sessions, and submit their final assessments during the study group period.

Students who do not complete these requirements within their assigned study group and wish to continue receiving teacher guidance must join a new study group.

A $90 Study Group Reassignment Fee applies when a student:

  • does not complete the required coursework within their assigned study group and wishes to continue with a new study group;
  • requests a different teacher;
  • requests reassignment to a study group in a different time zone after allocation; or
  • requests a change to their Zoom schedule after the first live Zoom session.

Requests made before the first live Zoom session will be accommodated free of charge, subject to availability.

Students who need to pause their studies due to medical reasons may rejoin a future study group without paying the reassignment fee. A valid medical certificate is required.

300-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training

The 300-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training operates with an ongoing live study group rather than fixed cohorts.

Unlike the 200-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training, students are not assigned to a fixed study group or teacher, and the Study Group Reassignment Policy does not apply.

Students may attend live Zoom sessions according to their availability. To be eligible for graduation, students must complete a minimum of 45 hours of live Zoom training, including the required teaching practice hours outlined in the course curriculum.

Once a student confirms they are ready to begin and is activated in the live study group, they have 12 months to complete all graduation requirements and qualify for certification.
