Yoga Teacher Training Retreat in Bali: What 20 Nights at Amertham Are Like

A yoga teacher training retreat is a residential program that combines formal teacher training with living on site for the full course. It is not the same thing as a wellness retreat. Our Amertham training in Bali is one example: 20 nights, approximately three weeks, built around Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga, with accommodation and meals included in the residential package.

Quick Answer: What Is a Yoga Teacher Training Retreat in Bali?

A yoga teacher training retreat is a structured teacher training program delivered residentially, where students stay at the training venue for the duration of the course. The format combines formal education, daily practice, teaching development, theory and assessment with accommodation and a shared living environment.

The word “retreat” can mislead here. A leisure-focused yoga retreat is built around rest and recreation, with practice offered rather than required. A yoga teacher training is first and foremost a structured training course, with a timetable, coursework and assessments at the end. It may sometimes be described as a “retreat” because you step away from your usual routine and stay immersed in the training environment, but the purpose is education and teacher development rather than leisure.

What Makes Amertham a Residential Yoga Teacher Training Retreat?

Amertham yoga teacher training accommodation and swimming pool in Bali

The difference is where you are between sessions. A weekly studio course fits training around your existing life. A day-format training asks you to travel in and out each day. A residential program puts the training and your accommodation in one place for the whole course, which is what Amertham does across its 20 nights.

A Jungle Setting Above a River Gorge

Amertham is a secluded jungle sanctuary set above a deep river gorge, surrounded by dense greenery and within earshot of flowing water — an environment designed to support focused practice and reflection. More than ten waterfall locations are within 10 km of Amertham, and three of Bali’s largest natural parks are roughly a 20-minute drive away. If a setting like this is part of what you are looking for, our overview of nature-based yoga teacher training covers the wider category.

Living and Training in the Same Environment

Practically, a residential format removes the daily commute and the planning that goes with it. Sessions, meals and your room are all on one property, so breaks between sessions are usable for rest rather than travel. You also spend three weeks alongside the same group of students, who are working through the same material on the same schedule.

Yoga Teacher Training Retreat vs Yoga Retreat: What Is the Difference?

The two are often marketed in similar language, but they are different products with different outcomes.

A wellness-focused yoga retreat may offer A teacher training program such as Amertham includes
Purpose Rest, travel and personal practice A structured 200-hour qualification
Training hours No set total; sessions are usually optional A defined 200-hour curriculum
Teaching methodology Rarely covered A taught component of the program
Practice teaching Not typically included Part of teaching development
Assessments None Practical and theoretical exams
Completion No credential A school-issued completion certificate
Daily structure Flexible, largely self-directed A set timetable from morning to evening
Accommodation Usually included Included — 20 nights at Amertham
Who it suits People wanting a break with yoga in it People wanting to learn to teach, or to study seriously

Retreats vary considerably, so treat the left column as what one is likely to involve rather than a rule. The point of the comparison is the direction of travel: one is built around rest, the other around coursework.

How Is the 200-Hour Amertham Training Structured?

The three weeks each carry a different emphasis, building from foundation to teaching.

Week 1: Hatha Yoga Foundations

The opening week establishes a Hatha yoga foundation — the postural and breath vocabulary the rest of the program builds on.

Week 2: Vinyasa Flow

The second week moves into Vinyasa Flow, applying the first week’s foundation to continuous, breath-linked sequences.

Week 3: Ashtanga and Teaching Development

The final week combines Ashtanga yoga with teaching development, shifting the emphasis from practicing to instructing.

Practical and Theoretical Assessments

The program concludes with practical and theoretical examinations. Students who successfully complete the requirements receive the applicable training completion certificate.

If you are still deciding which style suits you, it is worth reading our comparison to compare Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga teacher training — a multi-style program like this one suits students who do not yet have a preference.

What Else Do Students Study at Amertham?

Alongside the three styles, our 200-hour training includes a number of additional components. These form part of the single 200-hour program rather than separate certifications.

Meditation, Mantra and Yoga Nidra

Meditation and mantra are taught as part of the curriculum, with Yoga Nidra — a guided relaxation practice — included as its own component.

Shatkarma and Ayurveda

Shatkarma refers to traditional yogic cleansing practices. Ayurveda is introduced as a related system of principles rather than as clinical or medical instruction.

Teaching Methodology, Alignment and Biomechanics

Teaching methodology, alignment, hands-on adjustments, biomechanics and injury-prevention considerations are all listed, alongside pranayama and yoga philosophy. This group is where a 200-hour program turns practice into teaching.

Kirtan, Sound and Voice Practices

The training also includes Kirtan, sound healing and Voice Activation. Voice work is directly relevant to teaching, since instructing a room is a spoken skill.

What Does a Typical Day at a Residential YTT Look Like?

Two yoga students practicing partner yoga outdoors at Amertham in Bali

Days are structured from early morning to evening, and the rhythm is consistent even though no two days are identical. A typical day moves through early-morning cleansing practices and chanting, asana and pranayama, breakfast, a theory and study block, Yoga Nidra, lunch, teaching methodology, alignment and adjustment work, and a closing evening practice.

That is a full day rather than a strenuous one, and the structure is what carries most students through three weeks of it. The daily schedule is subject to change at the teacher’s discretion, so treat it as a shape rather than a fixed timetable and check our current Amertham program information for the latest schedule details.

Where Do You Stay During Amertham’s 20-Night Training?

Four room categories are currently offered. The training, meals and inclusions are identical in each, so the room is the only variable.

Dorm Room

Dorm room accommodation for yoga teacher training students at Amertham

A female dorm with four single beds. The lowest-priced option.

Triple Room

Triple room accommodation at Amertham yoga teacher training in Bali

A female room with three single beds.

Twin Room

Twin room accommodation at Amertham yoga teacher training in Bali

A female-only shared room with two single beds.

Private Room

Private room accommodation at Amertham yoga teacher training in Bali

A private room with a double bed.

Current room listings include a shower, air conditioning, hot water and Wi-Fi. Across a 20-night stay, how many people you share with is worth weighing honestly against the price difference — rest quality matters more on an intensive schedule than it does on a holiday.

What Meals Are Included at Amertham?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are currently listed as included with the Amertham residential training packages. We serve fresh, Ayurvedic-inspired vegetarian meals prepared with organic ingredients.

This is worth checking against any program you compare, because meal arrangements differ widely between schools and are one of the most common hidden differences between two similar-looking prices.

Can Beginners Join a Yoga Teacher Training Retreat at Amertham?

Yes. Our Amertham program is open to all levels, including complete beginners.

Prior teaching experience is not required, and neither is an intention to teach afterward. You do not need to plan on becoming a yoga teacher to join. Some students enroll to deepen a personal practice in a structured setting rather than to work as teachers. Practice experience and teaching experience are also different things: a 200-hour program exists to build the second.

How Much Does a Yoga Teacher Training Retreat at Amertham Cost?

1. Two yoga students practicing tree pose in the tropical gardens at Amertham

The fee depends on which room you choose. Current Amertham pricing at the time of this October 2026 update:

Room Regular Current early bird
Dorm $2,500 $2,125
Triple $2,810 $2,390
Twin $3,200 $2,720
Private $3,900 $3,315

We currently offer a 15% early-bird rate for eligible Amertham bookings. Rates, eligibility and availability can change, and the early-bird figures are not a single price applying to every category.

Room choice is what moves the total, since the training, meals, materials and equipment are the same in every category. Currently $1,190 separates the dorm from the private room — that difference buys privacy and nothing else.

For how training fees are built more generally, see how yoga teacher training costs are structured. For this program specifically, check our current Amertham pricing and room availability.

What Is Included in the Amertham Residential Package?

The current package covers:

  • 20 nights of accommodation in your chosen room category
  • The 200-hour training
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Yoga equipment

What Should You Budget for Beyond the Training Package?

Several costs sit outside any training fee, and they are where trip budgets are usually underestimated:

  • Flights to and from Bali
  • Travel insurance covering the length of your stay and daily physical activity
  • Indonesian entry requirements and any associated costs, which depend on your nationality and length of stay and should be checked against current official sources
  • Personal spending and any activities outside the training schedule
  • Airport transfers, which are not included in our Amertham package

Airport transfers are not included in our Amertham package, but we can share the contact details of trusted drivers who have been driving our students for years. You can also arrange your own taxi or book a car through a local transport app.

Who Is Amertham’s Residential YTT Best Suited For?

This format may suit you if several of the following describe what you want:

  • A residential three-week program rather than a part-time or online format
  • A nature-focused setting away from town
  • Structured daily study with a set timetable
  • Exposure to Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga rather than a single style
  • Accommodation and training in the same place
  • A package where meals are included
  • An environment organized around the training schedule rather than around leisure

If you would rather train in a town with amenities nearby, or need a format you can fit around work, a different program is likely to serve you better — and that is worth establishing before you book rather than after.

For a broader view of the options across the island, see our complete guide to yoga teacher training in Bali.

What Does Yoga Alliance Registration Mean After a 200-Hour YTT?

Completing a training and registering as a teacher are two separate steps. YTT 200 is the training program itself. RYS 200 describes a school registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level. RYT 200 is an individual teacher registration, subject to Yoga Alliance’s own requirements.

Students who successfully complete the program receive the applicable training completion certificate. Individual registration is applied for separately, carries its own requirements and fees, and those requirements change — so check the current position directly, and understand Yoga Alliance 200-hour training and RYT registration before assuming what a certificate entitles you to.
