Best Yoga Teacher Trainings Immersed in Nature

Choosing where to complete your yoga teacher training is about more than finding a beautiful location. The environment you choose becomes part of your learning experience; shaping your practice, your perspective, and the kind of teacher you become.

For some students, this journey begins beside the ocean, practising with the sound of waves nearby. For others, it begins in the mountains, surrounded by silence and nature. Some are called to ancient spiritual centres where yoga has been practised for generations.

The best places to do yoga teacher training offer more than a destination. They offer space to slow down, deepen your practice, connect with a community, and fully immerse yourself in the teachings of yoga.

What to Look for When Choosing a Yoga Teacher Training Destination

What to Look for When Choosing a Yoga Teacher Training Destination

Before you book flights and pack your mats, there are a few key criteria that separate a meaningful learning experience from a disappointing one. Knowing what to look for will help you find the best places to do yoga teacher training for your specific goals.

Accreditation and Curriculum Standards

Yoga Alliance registration is the global benchmark for yoga teacher credentials. Always confirm that your chosen school is a Registered Yoga School. A Yoga Alliance certificate opens doors to teaching in studios, gyms, wellness centres, and retreats worldwide, and it is the minimum standard that reputable employers recognise. The curriculum should cover anatomy, philosophy, pranayama, sequencing, and teaching methodology, not just asana, and should reflect the documented health benefits of a regular yoga practice that trainees will one day teach to their own students.

Immersion Style: Residential vs Modular Training

In person, residential trainings allow you to fully immerse yourself in yoga, stepping away from everyday distractions and embracing a daily rhythm of practice, study, and community.

If you are unable to commit to a full in person training, modular or weekend formats can offer greater flexibility while still providing a comprehensive education. Many students, however, find that an immersive residential training creates the deepest personal growth and the strongest connection to the teachings.

Best Beach Destinations for Yoga Teacher Training

Training beside the ocean brings a natural cadence to your practice. The tides, the salt air, and the sound of waves create an environment that is simultaneously grounding and expansive. Here are the standout coastal locations consistently recognised as some of the best places to do yoga teacher training in the world.

Bali, Indonesia: The Global Yoga Capital

Bali, particularly the creative hub of Ubud and the surf-and-wellness corridor of Canggu, has become synonymous with yoga culture. The island offers a dense ecosystem of Yoga Alliance-registered schools and rich spiritual traditions rooted in Balinese Hindu tradition. Most programmes here focus on Vinyasa, Ashtanga, or a fusion of styles, with daily practice often including opportunities to experience Balinese culture alongside the training. Bali is ideal for those who want cultural immersion alongside their training.

Bali is widely regarded as one of the world’s most popular destinations for yoga teacher training, offering a blend of yoga practice, wellness culture, and cultural experiences.

Goa, India: Spiritual Sands

For those drawn to India’s rich yoga heritage while seeking a relaxed coastal setting, Goa is a popular destination. The region offers a variety of Hatha, Kundalini, and Yin Yoga programmes, many of which incorporate elements of classical Indian philosophy. South Goa is generally known for its quieter, retreat-style atmosphere, while North Goa offers a more vibrant environment.

For travellers seeking a coastal training destination in India, Goa offers a combination of established yoga schools, a relaxed atmosphere, and residential training options. For spiritual depth, Goa consistently earns its place among the best places to do yoga teacher training near the sea.

Costa Rica: Eco-Retreat Training on the Pacific Coast

Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, home to the well-known yoga destination of Nosara, has grown into one of the most sought-after destinations for certification in the Western Hemisphere. Expect open-air shalas nestled in jungle canopy, surf culture, plant-based cuisine, and a strong community of dedicated practitioners. Many trainings in Costa Rica lean toward therapeutic yoga, trauma-informed training, and advanced anatomy, which may appeal to those already working in wellness or healthcare.

Top Mountain Locations for an Immersive Yoga Training

Top Mountain Locations for an Immersive Yoga Training

Altitude, silence, and the grandeur of peaks have drawn seekers to mountains for thousands of years. For yoga trainees, the mountain environment supports a meditative inward focus that is harder to cultivate near busy beaches. If you are looking for the best places to do yoga teacher training that offer genuine spiritual depth, these mountain destinations are unparalleled.

Rishikesh, India: The Birthplace of Yoga

No discussion of the best places to do yoga teacher training is complete without Rishikesh. Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas along the sacred Ganges River, this is the city where the Maharishi hosted the Beatles, where global yoga pilgrimage culture was born, and where classical Hatha, Sivananda, and Iyengar lineages are still taught in their purest forms.

Programmes in Rishikesh range from traditional ashram-style immersions to contemporary multi-style certifications. Rishikesh is widely regarded as one of the world’s most respected destinations for Yoga Teacher Training in India, and many students consider training there an important milestone in their yoga journey.

At House of Om, we often recommend Rishikesh to students who want to deepen their understanding of yoga’s origins and traditional teachings.

Dharamsala, India: Himalayan Meditation and Yin Yoga

If Rishikesh is yoga’s heartland, Dharamsala is its contemplative sibling. Situated in the Kangra Valley with views of the Dhauladhar range, this is the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile and the home of a distinctly meditative approach to yoga. Training programmes here frequently emphasise Yin Yoga, restorative practices, Vipassana, and mindfulness-based approaches. Smaller cohorts and quieter surroundings make it one of the best places to do yoga teacher training for introspective personalities.

The Pyrenees and Swiss Alps: European Mountain Training

For those looking to train in Europe, mountain retreat centres in the Pyrenees, the Swiss Alps, and the Dolomites offer a growing selection of Yoga Alliance-registered programmes. These programmes are often smaller in size and may focus on therapeutic yoga, advanced anatomy, or somatic approaches. Many retreat centres also provide accommodation and meals as part of the training package.

Best Yoga Teacher Training in Ashrams and Wellness Centres

For those seeking authentic lineage and the full yogic lifestyle, an ashram or dedicated retreat centre offers something no hotel-based programme can replicate: community. Living, eating, and practising together throughout a residential programme helps build community, and many students value this shared learning environment. These are the best yoga teacher trainings for certification if you are committed to genuine immersion.

Mysore, India: Ashtanga at Its Source

Mysore is a pilgrimage for Ashtanga practitioners. The city’s tradition of Mysore-style self-practice, where students move at their own pace through the Primary and Intermediate Series under the guidance of an authorised teacher, is unlike any other yoga experience in the world. If your goal is to teach Ashtanga with integrity, training in Mysore is widely regarded as one of the best places to study traditional Ashtanga Yoga. This is not a beginner destination; many traditional Ashtanga schools expect students to have an established personal practice before enrolling. Requirements vary between schools.

Chiang Mai, Thailand: Jungle Ashrams and Wellness Retreats

Koh Phangan offers a unique setting for Yoga Teacher Training, combining tropical beaches, natural surroundings, and a well-established wellness community. Many students choose the island for its relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to focus on their practice away from busy city life.

At House of Om, our 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training and 200-Hour Hybrid Yoga Teacher Training in Koh Phangan combine Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, and elements of Ashtanga with Yoga Alliance–accredited instruction. Students also explore meditation, pranayama, yoga philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methodology while learning in a beachfront environment designed to support focused study and personal growth.

Whether you choose Bali, Rishikesh, or Koh Phangan, the learning environment becomes part of the experience. At House of Om, each destination is designed to support a different style of learning while maintaining the same internationally recognised training standards.

How to Choose the Right Yoga Teacher Training Programme for You

With so many of the best places to do yoga teacher training available globally, narrowing your choice comes down to a few personal factors:

  • Yoga style: Classical Hatha and Ashtanga thrive in India. Vinyasa and fusion dominate Bali. Therapeutic and somatic approaches are stronger in Europe.
  • Environment: Crave community and sea? Choose a beach destination. Seek silence and depth? A mountain location will serve you better.
  • Career goals: Teaching at resorts or spas? Consider Bali, Thailand, or Costa Rica. Building a studio or independent practice? India’s classical training provides the deepest foundation.

The team at House of Om is always available to help you match your personal goals to the right programme. Our team can help you choose a programme that aligns with your goals in finding the best places to do yoga teacher training for your unique path, and we are here to support yours too.

Finding Your Ideal Yoga Teacher Training Destination

The best places to do yoga teacher training are not defined by a single ranking; they are defined by fit. The right destination aligns with your practice style, your personality, and the kind of teacher you aspire to become. What matters most is that you choose a Yoga Alliance-registered school, commit fully to the process, and trust that the environment you choose will teach you as much as any textbook.

From Bali’s vibrant yoga communities to the traditional teachings of Rishikesh, from the tropical island surroundings of Koh Phangan, Thailand, to the peaceful mountains of Dharamsala, the world is filled with meaningful places to begin your yoga teaching journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best country for yoga teacher training?

The best country for yoga teacher training depends on the type of experience you are looking for. India, particularly destinations such as Rishikesh, Goa, Mysore, and Dharamsala, offers a deep connection to yoga’s traditional roots. Bali is a popular choice for students seeking a blend of yoga, culture, nature, and international community, while Thailand offers a peaceful island environment surrounded by nature. The right destination is the one that best supports your personal goals, learning style, and yoga journey.

Do I need prior teaching experience to enrol in a yoga teacher training?

You do not need prior teaching experience to join a 200 hour yoga teacher training. Many students begin their journey with a sincere desire to deepen their own practice and learn how to share yoga with others. While having a regular yoga practice is beneficial, the most important qualities are commitment, curiosity, and an openness to learn.

Is a yoga teacher training certificate recognised worldwide?

Yoga Alliance’s RYT-200 and RYT-500 designations are the most internationally recognised yoga teacher credentials. They are accepted by the majority of studios, gyms, wellness resorts, and retreat centres globally. Always verify that your chosen school is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with Yoga Alliance before enrolling to ensure your certificate carries full professional weight.

Students must begin their online course within 12 months of the date of purchase.

Students who do not begin the course within this period will be required to pay a $90 Study Group Allocation Fee before joining a study group.

Delaying the start of the course may affect eligibility for Yoga Alliance certification, as certification requirements are determined by Yoga Alliance and may change over time.

3. Study Group Policy

200-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training

Study Group Allocation

Students who select “Start as soon as possible” during enrollment will be assigned to the next available study group based on their preferred time zone and availability.

House of Om offers multiple study groups across different time zones to accommodate students worldwide.

Students who are not ready to begin should select “Do not want to start yet” during enrollment or notify Student Support before study group allocation.

Study groups are generally allocated within 2–4 weeks, although this may vary depending on teacher availability and the formation of suitable groups.

Guided Study Group

The 200-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training is delivered through guided study groups led by an assigned teacher. Each study group is designed to be completed over approximately 4 months, consisting of:

  • Approximately 3 months of live Zoom sessions.
  • Up to 1 additional month for homework review, teacher feedback, and final assessments.

Students are expected to complete all mandatory homework assignments, attend the required live Zoom sessions, and submit their final assessments during the study group period.

Students who do not complete these requirements within their assigned study group and wish to continue receiving teacher guidance must join a new study group.

A $90 Study Group Reassignment Fee applies when a student:

  • does not complete the required coursework within their assigned study group and wishes to continue with a new study group;
  • requests a different teacher;
  • requests reassignment to a study group in a different time zone after allocation; or
  • requests a change to their Zoom schedule after the first live Zoom session.

Requests made before the first live Zoom session will be accommodated free of charge, subject to availability.

Students who need to pause their studies due to medical reasons may rejoin a future study group without paying the reassignment fee. A valid medical certificate is required.

300-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training

The 300-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training operates with an ongoing live study group rather than fixed cohorts.

Unlike the 200-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training, students are not assigned to a fixed study group or teacher, and the Study Group Reassignment Policy does not apply.

Students may attend live Zoom sessions according to their availability. To be eligible for graduation, students must complete a minimum of 45 hours of live Zoom training, including the required teaching practice hours outlined in the course curriculum.

Once a student confirms they are ready to begin and is activated in the live study group, they have 12 months to complete all graduation requirements and qualify for certification.

Students who are unable to complete all graduation requirements within this period may purchase a 6-month Course Completion Extension for an additional $90.

Students are responsible for attending the required live training hours and successfully completing all graduation requirements within the applicable course completion deadline.
