Yoga Certification Bali: What 200-Hour Training and RYT Registration Mean

When people search for “yoga certification Bali,” they are usually combining three different things: a 200-hour training course, the certificate a school issues after successful completion, and optional individual registration such as RYT 200. These are related, but they are not the same credential, and confusing them is the most common reason students are surprised after graduating. This guide separates them, then shows where our Amertham program in Bali sits in the pathway.

Quick Answer: What Does “Yoga Certification in Bali” Actually Mean?

In practice the phrase usually refers to a combination of three things: enrolling in a 200-hour yoga teacher training, receiving a school-issued completion certificate once you satisfy that program’s requirements, and becoming eligible to apply for separate professional registration with a body such as Yoga Alliance.

Only the first two involve the school. The third is an application you make yourself, to a different organization, under its own current requirements. A school cannot hand you a registration, and a registration is not the same as a license to work.

Yoga Certification Terms at a Glance

Term What it is Who holds or issues it Automatic after training?
YTT 200 A 200-hour teacher-training program The student enrolls in it Not applicable
Completion certificate Proof that program requirements were completed Issued by the school Only after the applicable requirements are satisfied
RYS 200 Registered Yoga School designation Held by the school No — it applies to the school, not the graduate
RYT 200 Registered Yoga Teacher designation Held by an individual who registers with Yoga Alliance after meeting current requirements No — a separate registration process

This table is the reference point for everything below. The sections that follow add context rather than repeating these definitions.

What Is a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

A 200-hour yoga teacher training is the course itself — the foundation-level program most schools and studios treat as the entry qualification for teaching. The number describes the training’s total contact hours, not a credential you hold. Curriculum, format and delivery vary considerably between schools, so two programs described the same way can differ substantially in what they actually teach. Enrolling in one is not itself a professional registration. For a fuller breakdown, see what a 200-hour yoga teacher training covers.

What Certificate Do You Receive After a 200-Hour YTT?

You receive the school’s own completion certificate, issued once you satisfy that program’s completion requirements — which may include attendance, assessments or both, depending on the school.

That document is not an RYT 200, and Yoga Alliance does not issue it. It is the school’s record that you completed the school’s training. If you later apply for individual registration, your certificate is one of the things you supply as evidence, and the organization you apply to sets its own current requirements for what that document must show.

What Does RYS 200 Mean?

RYS 200 refers to the school, not to you. It describes a training provider registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level, and it stays with the school whether or not any particular graduate goes on to register. A school holding that designation does not make its graduates registered teachers automatically. For a deeper comparison of the two, see RYT 200 vs RYS 200.

What Does RYT 200 Mean?

RYT 200 refers to an individual teacher who has registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level, having met its current requirements and completed the applicable application process.

It is held by you rather than by your school, it is applied for rather than awarded, and it carries its own requirements and fees that change over time. Because those requirements are set by Yoga Alliance and can be revised, check the current position on the official Yoga Alliance website rather than relying on any article, including this one. Our guide to what Yoga Alliance 200-hour teacher training means covers the standards side in more detail.

Does Completing a 200-Hour YTT Automatically Make You an RYT 200?

No. Completing an eligible 200-hour training and registering individually as an RYT 200 are separate steps, and the second does not happen on its own.

The sequence runs like this: enroll in and complete a 200-hour training; satisfy that school’s completion requirements; receive the school-issued certificate; and then, if you want the credential and are eligible, apply separately to Yoga Alliance under its current requirements. Not every course qualifies for every registration pathway, so if registration is part of your goal, eligibility is something to confirm before you book rather than after you graduate.

Does Yoga Alliance Certify Yoga Teachers?

Not in those terms. Yoga Alliance describes itself as a registry for yoga teachers and schools, and its operative designations are Registered Yoga School and Registered Yoga Teacher — registration rather than certification.

The distinction is more than pedantry. “Certified by Yoga Alliance” implies an assessment of you by that organization, which is not what registration is. Your competence is assessed by your training school, which issues your certificate; the registry records that you hold qualifying training and have met its requirements. Marketing copy across the industry blurs this constantly, which is why it is worth knowing what you are actually buying.

Can You Teach Yoga After Completing a 200-Hour Training?

Many people do. A 200-hour training is commonly used as the foundational pathway into teaching, but completing one does not guarantee employment, registration, insurance eligibility or legal work authorization.

Employers set their own hiring standards, and those vary widely: some studios ask for registry listing, some ask for specific style training, some ask for neither and hire on a demo class. Insurance providers set their own conditions too. The honest summary is that a 200-hour certificate opens a door rather than guaranteeing what is behind it.

How Can You Verify a Yoga Certification Program in Bali?

Twelve checks, and none of them involves trusting a logo on a website:

  • What exactly is being sold — a 200-hour training, a retreat, or something in between?

Is the school currently listed in the Yoga Alliance directory, if registration matters to you? Check the directory itself rather than the school’s own claim

  • What certificate is issued on completion, and in whose name?
  • What requirements must be completed to receive it?
  • Is individual registration a separate step, and does the school say so plainly?
  • What curriculum is taught, and how are the hours distributed?
  • Are practical assessments required?
  • Who will be teaching your specific cohort?
  • What format is used — residential, hybrid or online?
  • What does the price include, and what sits outside it?
  • What are the refund, cancellation and date-change policies?
  • What local teaching or work requirements apply where you intend to teach?

How Our Amertham 200-Hour Training Fits the Pathway

Two yoga students balancing together in a tropical garden at Amertham Bali

Amertham is our residential 200-hour yoga teacher training location in Bali, running 20 nights — approximately three weeks — with students staying and training at the same property. It is a worked example of the first half of the pathway above: the training, and the certificate that follows it.

The Three-Week Training Structure

Week one builds a Hatha yoga foundation, week two moves into Vinyasa Flow, and week three covers Ashtanga alongside teaching development. For how the styles relate to each other, see how Amertham combines Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga.

Training Assessments

Practical and theoretical examinations are currently listed at the end of the training. This matters to the certification question: a program with assessments is one where the certificate records something you demonstrated.

Who Can Join?

Our Amertham training is open to all levels, including complete beginners, and you do not need to plan on becoming a yoga teacher to join.

Residential Format

Twenty nights, with dorm, triple, twin and private room options, and breakfast, lunch and dinner currently listed in the packages.

What Happens After Successful Completion?

We issue the applicable completion certificate once you successfully complete the program requirements. If individual Yoga Alliance registration is part of your goal, verify our current school and program status in the Yoga Alliance directory and review Yoga Alliance’s current individual application requirements separately before booking on that basis.

Can Beginners Complete a 200-Hour Training in Bali?

It depends on the school, since entry requirements vary and some publish them while others do not. Our Amertham training is open to all levels, including complete beginners. We do not currently publish a minimum practice-history requirement for Amertham, so do not assume a specific amount of prior practice is required.. For readiness and preparation in detail, see our guide to beginner yoga teacher training in Bali.

What Should You Compare Besides Certification?

Registry status and certificates tell you about paperwork, not about teaching. A program can be registered and still be thin, and the certificate looks the same either way.

What actually determines whether you leave able to teach: the curriculum and how its hours are distributed, who is teaching your cohort and what they bring, how much supervised practice teaching is included, how you are assessed, the format and daily schedule, the residential setup, accommodation and meals, the total cost, the booking policies, the support available during training, and whether all of that matches what you personally want to do afterward. Certification is one line on that list rather than the whole of it.

How Much Does a 200-Hour YTT in Bali Cost?

Costs vary by school, accommodation type and what the package includes, which makes headline figures hard to compare directly. Our Amertham pricing varies by room type and current booking terms. We publish current rates, inclusions and availability on the Amertham program page. Certificate vs Registration vs Work Authorization: Why the Difference Matters

Five different questions, five different answers, five different parties controlling them:

Question Relevant document or status Who controls it
Did I complete the course? School-issued completion certificate The school
Is the school registered? RYS status Yoga Alliance
Am I individually registered? RYT status Yoga Alliance, via your own application
Can I legally work in a country? Work authorization and local law The relevant authority
Will a studio hire me? Employer requirements The employer

Reading down that right-hand column is the clearest way to see why no single document answers all five questions.

What Should You Ask Before Paying a Deposit?

Ten questions to put to any school in writing before money changes hands:

  • Is this specific program currently eligible for the registration pathway I want?
  • Is the school’s current status verifiable in the relevant directory?
  • What completion certificate will I receive, and what does it state?
  • What assessments must I pass?
  • What attendance requirements apply?
  • Is individual registration a separate process?
  • Are registration fees separate from tuition?
  • What exactly is included in the tuition?
  • What are the current cancellation and rescheduling terms?
  • Which dates and room types are actually available?

For Amertham specifically, you can review our current program details, dates and booking information on the Amertham program page

FAQs

What certification do you get after a 200-hour YTT in Bali?

You receive the training school’s own completion certificate, issued once you satisfy that program’s requirements. It is not a Yoga Alliance credential, and Yoga Alliance does not issue it. Individual registration, if you want it, is applied for separately afterward.

Is a 200-hour certificate the same as RYT 200?

No. The certificate is issued by your school and records that you completed its training. RYT 200 is an individual registration with Yoga Alliance, applied for by you under its current requirements. One does not automatically produce the other.

What is the difference between RYS 200 and RYT 200?

RYS 200 describes a school registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level. RYT 200 describes an individual teacher registered at that level. A school holding RYS status does not make its graduates RYTs automatically.

Do you automatically become RYT 200 after graduating?

No. Registration is a separate application you make to Yoga Alliance, subject to its current requirements and fees. Completing a training makes you potentially eligible if the program qualifies; it does not register you.

Is RYT 200 a teaching license?

No. It is a professional registry designation rather than a government license. Whether you can legally teach or work somewhere depends on local law, immigration rules, employer requirements and insurance conditions, all of which sit outside the registry.

Can beginners join a 200-hour YTT in Bali?

That depends on the school. Our Amertham program is open to all levels, including complete beginners, and we do not currently publish a minimum practice-history requirement. Other schools set their own entry requirements, so check each one individually.

Can you teach internationally with a Bali yoga certificate?

Not automatically. Yoga Alliance is used as a professional registry within the yoga industry, but acceptance and requirements vary by employer and jurisdiction, and work authorization is a separate legal matter from any training credential.

How can I check whether a yoga school is currently registered?

Use the public directory on the Yoga Alliance website to search for the school rather than relying on claims or logos on its own pages. Listings change, so check close to the time you plan to book.

The distinction worth carrying away is that a training, a completion certificate, an individual registration and legal work authorization are four separate things controlled by four different parties. Understanding that before you book is what prevents the unpleasant surprise after you graduate. Our Amertham training is one Bali example of the first two: a residential 200-hour program with assessments and a completion certificate issued after successful completion.
