Yes. Our 200-hour Amertham training in Bali is open to all levels, including complete beginners. Prior teaching experience is not required, and neither is an intention to teach afterward. What matters more before booking is understanding the daily commitment, the curriculum and the residential format — which is what this guide covers.
Quick Answer: Can a Complete Beginner Do Yoga Teacher Training in Bali?

Usually yes, though entry requirements are set by each school and should be checked individually rather than assumed. Some Bali programs publish prerequisites; others do not.
For Amertham specifically, we welcome all levels, including complete beginners, and you do not need to plan on becoming a yoga teacher to join. What a beginner should still weigh is the commitment: a 200-hour residential program is a structured course with a daily timetable and examinations at the end.

What Experience Do You Need Before a 200-Hour YTT?

Do You Need Years of Yoga Practice?
We do not publish a minimum practice-history requirement for our Amertham training. Our Amertham training welcomes complete beginners, dedicated practitioners and people who want to explore yoga more deeply. If a specific amount of prior practice matters to your decision, contact our team and we can clarify the current requirements.
Do You Need Teaching Experience?
No. Prior teaching experience is not listed as a requirement, and teaching methodology is a taught component of the program. This is the distinction worth holding onto: practice experience and teaching experience are different things, and a 200-hour program exists to build the second. For a fuller breakdown of what those hours contain, see what a 200-hour yoga teacher training covers.
Do You Need an Advanced Asana Practice?
Advanced posture ability is not listed as an entry requirement, and the curriculum begins with Hatha foundations rather than assuming an existing repertoire. We do not currently publish a detailed weighting for the assessments, so it is better not to assume whether individual postures are specifically tested
Do You Need to Be Flexible Before Yoga Teacher Training?
No specific flexibility standard is published as an Amertham entry requirement.
Flexibility and readiness are not the same question. Readiness is mostly about whether you are prepared for a structured routine of daily practice and study across three weeks. Working within your own range is normal in a training environment, and it is also something you will later teach your own students to do.
What Will a Beginner Learn First at Amertham?
The three weeks are sequenced so that each builds on the last, which is what makes a mixed-experience intake workable.
Week 1: Hatha Foundations
The opening week establishes a Hatha yoga foundation. For a beginner this matters: the physical curriculum starts at the beginning rather than partway up, so the postural and breath vocabulary is taught rather than assumed.
Week 2: Vinyasa Flow
The second week moves into Vinyasa Flow, applying week one’s foundation to continuous, breath-linked sequences. The step up is in pace and continuity rather than in difficulty of individual postures.
Week 3: Ashtanga and Teaching Development
The final week combines Ashtanga with teaching development, shifting the emphasis from practicing to instructing. Our Amertham program is rooted in Hatha and Vinyasa Flow, with elements of Ashtanga
Practical and Theoretical Assessments
Both examinations fall at the end of the training. Students who successfully complete the program requirements receive the applicable training completion certificate.
If you are unsure which style suits you, it is worth taking a moment to compare Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga teacher training — though a multi-style program is often the easier choice when you do not yet have a preference.
What Else Is Included in the Training Curriculum?
Alongside the three styles, our 200-hour training includes a number of additional components. These form part of the single 200-hour program rather than separate qualifications.
Breath, Meditation and Yoga Nidra
Our curriculum also includes pranayama, meditation, mantra and Yoga Nidra, a guided relaxation practice.
Teaching Methodology and Alignment
Teaching methodology, alignment, hands-on adjustments, biomechanics, injury-prevention considerations and teaching development. For a first-time student this is the group that turns a personal practice into the ability to lead a room.
Additional Yogic Practices
Shatkarma (yogic cleansing practices), Ayurveda, kirtan, sound healing and Voice Activation. The voice work is more practical than it sounds — instructing a class is a spoken skill, rarely trained directly elsewhere.
Is a 200-Hour Residential YTT Too Intensive for a Beginner?

It is demanding, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than reassuring you past the question.
The residential format involves full training days, so beginners should expect a more structured and intensive routine than a weekly studio class. That structure is also what carries most students through — but individual circumstances differ, and nothing here should be read as a promise that any particular person will find it comfortable.
Anyone with health, injury or mobility concerns should discuss participation with an appropriate healthcare professional and contact our team before booking so we can clarify the training requirements.
What Does a Beginner’s Day at Amertham Look Like?
Days run from early morning to evening. The published rhythm moves through cleansing practices and chanting, asana and pranayama, breakfast, a theory and study block, Yoga Nidra, lunch, teaching methodology, alignment and adjustment work, and a closing evening practice.
Each day follows that broad shape rather than repeating identically, and the daily schedule is subject to change at the teacher’s discretion. Treat the published timetable as an indication and check our Amertham program page for the latest schedule details.
What If You Want to Deepen Your Practice but Do Not Want to Teach?
Teaching ambition is not required. Many students join our Amertham training to deepen their personal practice rather than to work as teachers afterward.
Enrolling does not commit you to a teaching career. You will still cover the teaching content, because it is part of the 200-hour curriculum — and that content is often what makes the rest of the material make sense, whether or not you ever stand at the front of a class.
How Does Amertham’s Residential Setting Affect a First YTT?
Mostly in practical ways. Amertham is a secluded jungle sanctuary set above a deep river gorge, surrounded by dense greenery and the sound of flowing water. More than ten waterfall locations are within 10 km of Amertham, and three of Bali’s largest natural parks are roughly a 20-minute drive away.
For a first-time student the practical effects matter more than the scenery. Training, accommodation and meals are on one property, so there is no daily commute and no separate booking to manage, and breaks between sessions can be used for rest rather than travel. You also spend three weeks alongside the same group, on the same schedule.

Where Do Beginners Stay During Amertham Training?
Four room categories are currently offered for the 20 nights. The training, meals and inclusions are the same in each.
| Room | Occupancy |
|---|---|
| Dorm | Female dorm, four single beds |
| Triple | Female room, three single beds |
| Twin | Female-only shared room, two single beds |
| Private | Double bed |
Current room listings include a shower, air conditioning, hot water and Wi-Fi. For a first training on an intensive schedule, how well you sleep in shared accommodation is worth weighing honestly against the price difference.
Are Meals Included at Amertham?
Yes. Our current Amertham package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. We serve fresh, Ayurvedic-inspired vegetarian meals prepared with organic ingredients.
Meal arrangements differ considerably between Bali schools, so confirm this individually for any program you compare.
How Should a Beginner Prepare Before Yoga Teacher Training in Bali?

None of the following is a published requirement. All of it tends to make the first week easier.
Build Consistency Rather Than Chasing Advanced Poses
Regular practice beforehand builds familiarity with the rhythm of daily training. We do not specify a required practice frequency before the training, so focus on consistency rather than intensity or achieving a particular posture.
Review the Published Program Structure
Read the curriculum, the three-week progression, the daily schedule and the assessment format before you arrive. Knowing the shape of the course removes a layer of uncertainty from the first days.
Prepare for a Structured Daily Routine
The training day starts early and runs through to the evening. Adjusting your sleep schedule beforehand removes one adjustment from an already full first week.
Review Travel Requirements
Check your passport validity against your travel dates, arrange travel insurance covering your stay and daily physical activity, and check current Indonesian entry requirements for your nationality against official government sources. Airport transfers are not included in our Amertham package, but we can share the contact details of trusted drivers who have been driving our students for years.
Tell Our Team About Relevant Concerns
Contact our team in advance about injuries, dietary needs, accommodation questions or accessibility requirements. These are easier to address before booking than on arrival.
What Should Beginners Check Before Booking a Bali YTT?
Twelve checks, useful for any school you are considering:
- Does the school accept complete beginners, and is that stated or assumed?
- What does the curriculum actually cover beyond asana?
- How much supervised teaching practice is included?
- What does the daily schedule look like?
- How is the program assessed, and when?
- What accommodation is offered, and how many share each room?
- Which meals are included, and on which days?
- What are the current training dates?
- Is your preferred room available on your chosen date?
- What is your total budget once travel, insurance and personal spending are added?
- What are the cancellation and date-change terms?
- What certificate is issued, and what does it entitle you to?
Our current Amertham booking information states that a $500 deposit secures a place and that date changes are free. Please check our current booking terms before relying on these conditions. For a wider view of the options across the island, see our complete guide to yoga teacher training in Bali.
How Much Does Amertham Cost for a First Yoga Teacher Training?

Pricing varies by room type. At the time of this October 2026 update, the dorm is shown from $2,125 under the current early-bird terms, against a regular rate of $2,500, with the private room the highest-priced category. A deposit of $500 can be used to secure a place.

What Does Yoga Alliance Registration Mean for a Beginner?
Completing a training and registering as a teacher are two separate steps, and the abbreviations are routinely used as if they were the same thing. YTT 200 is the training program. RYS 200 describes a school registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level. RYT 200 is an individual teacher registration, subject to Yoga Alliance’s own requirements.
Successful completion of the program results in the applicable training completion certificate. Registration is applied for separately by the individual, carries its own requirements and fees, and those requirements change — so check the current position directly and read how Yoga Alliance 200-hour training and RYT registration work before assuming what a certificate allows.
Is Amertham a Good Fit for Your First Yoga Teacher Training?
It may suit you if several of these describe what you want from a first training:
- A residential format rather than a part-time or online course
- A structured three-week program with a set timetable
- Exposure to Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga rather than a single style
- A nature-focused setting away from town
- Accommodation and meals built into the training
- Comfort with a full daily schedule across three weeks
If you would rather train somewhere with amenities nearby, or need a format you can fit around work, a different program will serve you better — worth settling before you book rather than after.

How much yoga experience do I need before a 200-hour YTT?
